Latest Purchase - !!! (chk chk chk)

!!! - Strange Weather, Isn't It? (Warp)

The fourth album by this odd-ball American outfit.  I was looking forward to this coming out as I've been following !!! for a while now.  The sound is pretty funky and the addition of a female vocalist makes the sound a little more like that of now the now defunct but similar band Out HudI've only had a couple of listens since I picked it up yesterday, but am looking forward to getting better acquainted.  I love the booming bass lines which are fairly typical of their sound

I've added a video for the first single off the album below so you can get yourself an idea what its like.

I've thought that while I'm posting about !!!, that this would be a good opportunity to highlight the song that kicked it all off for me.  Rothko picked this up first a good few years ago and played it often enough that it burrowed into my consciousness so much that I ended up obsessed with it and paying well over the odds for the single over the internet.  That started a pattern so now I've got almost all of their stuff.

I saw them live in Oran Mor a couple of years ago and they are fantastic live.  I was gutted to miss their last show at at the Arches, especially as it was effectively a free show.  I'd recommend them highly if you ever get the chance.

Most Played Tunes 2009

I've added a new page to the blog.  It's my top 50 most played tunes of last year and is packed with links to let you hear the tracks or follow up info on the artists and releases.

The lists get a wee bit squinty in places, but I don't think blogs are set up to create geeky tables, or at least I don't have the skills to make it all square. And believe me, I tried. And tried and then tried again.

Latest Purchase - Terror Danjah

Terror Danjah & DOK - Hysteria/Bruzin VIP (Hyperdub)

I've been following Kode9's Hyperdub label with interest for a wee while now.  I eagerly check the singles out as they get released.  I don't buy them all, but they are always an interesting listen and I probably take home more than I knock back.

I popped in to rubadub today to see if they had the new Cooly G single, but was disappointed to be told it was sold out already.  They had this in, which I hadn't known about.

I've already got the previous Terror Danjah on Hyperdub so I was extra keen to give it a spin and it sounded easily cool enough to pick up.

I reckon Hysteria would be the lead track, but there is a lot to like about both sides. It is quite mental though, with all the lazer synths and beats that tend towards the chaotic in places.

After getting it home and giving it a few listens, I'm a little in two minds about it, but time will tell.

Latest Purchase - Fuck Buttons

Fuck Buttons - Surf Solar 7"

After 2 weeks waiting for it in the post I finally picked this up today. Apparently the band describe their sound as 'rainbow rock', but i think of it as some of the best electronic noise I've heard in ages.  This is a song I learned about from Rothko, one of the other Molotov Disco DJs . It has had a lot of plays recently and I love it so much I just had to get my own copy.

The single is a gorgeous 7" picture disc, shown above. The song Surf Solar is a different version from the one on the album.  It's shorter and punchier, but finishes a wee bit abruptly by comparison.

Mix from Back in the Day

My brother and I have done a few mix cds over the years under the name of Infrasonics.  Our combined, but different perfectionist streaks made it difficult work at times, but the results always made it worth it.

I've added a link to SoundCloud where you can get our Beer for Breakfast mix.  I'd like to add a tracklist, but that will take a bit of work. Maybe later.

Enjoy. K.

Latest Purchase - Orchestre Poly-Rhythmo de Cotonou

Orchestre Poly-Rhythmo de Cotonou - The Vodoun Effect (1972-1975) (Analog Africa)

Music from Benin, which is about the first thing I've ever heard about the place other than the fact that it is a country in west Africa.

I've linked a video for one of the tracks that should give an idea of whats going on. In my mind its a mix of funk and psychedelia.

I bought this in Mono when I couldn't get another record I wanted off this Analog Africa label. I took a bit of a gamble as you can't listen to vinyl in there, but I'd heard a couple tunes off the net so I had an idea of the odds.  The photo on the cover alone is worth a few of the 20 quid it cost.

I play another song from this album on the mix I'll be posting next.

Introduction

Hi there.

I've decided to start this blog as a place to archive some of my DJing and record buying.

There are a also few things I have going on that I want to be able to signpost here as well.  I'll be adding links to my stuff elsewhere on the net and highlighting cool stuff by my mates.

I've been buying records for almost 3 decades and playing them loud in front of people for nearly 20 years and have decided I want to keep a note of what I'm doing these days.

I reckon my posts will be about the records I've been buying or getting excited about, with a bunch of stuff about my gigs, mixes and hopefully some tracklists from the nights I've played out.

I play records out around Glasgow as part of Molotov Disco with Kid Ritalin and Rothko. I also do a lot of messing around with tunes on the computer and decks in my flat.  I don't beatmatch when playing live, but I'll let the computer help me do that in the flat to make mix cds.

Anyhow, more later.
